Almost every large Colombia city has a gold museum, and Cartagena is no exception. Although it is small, the Museo de Oro hosts a fantastic collection of the gold and pottery of the Zenú (also known as Sinú) people, who inhabited the departments of Bolívar, Córdoba, Sucre and northern Antioquia before the Spanish Conquest.
Look out for special exhibitions and the guided tours, offered in both English and Spanish.
Inaugurated by the Banco de la República, in 1982 it opened its doors to the public in Cartagena de Indias, with a collection of gold and pottery from the main pre-Columbian cultures.
On July 20, 1984, it was remodelled for the first time, becoming a regional museum of Zenu culture.
The Gold Museum is located in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, in the walled sector, Plaza de Bolívar.
It contains the most beautiful testimony of Zenu culture. Through its different rooms the visitor will be able to appreciate the manifestations of this indigenous group.
The collection is made up of 538 pieces of goldsmithing, 61 pieces of ceramic, 12 pieces of lithics, 48 pieces of shells and 6 pieces of bone.
The Gold Museum has meant for the city and the region an important creative, didactic and economic effort, the result of which is recognized in the multiple cultural initiatives that have been generated from the activity of the bank of the Republic and in the constant increase in the number of people who take advantage of the cultural opportunities that are offered.
